A woman was killed and her husband critically injured after their son allegedly stabbed them at their home in Kurigram Sadar upazila early Wednesday.
 
The incident occurred around dawn in Belgachha Union, Officer-in-Charge of Kurigram Sadar Police Station Kamal Hossain confirmed the incident.
 
The deceased was identified as Munira Begum, 56. Her husband, Sardar Ali, 65, a retired textile engineer, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
 
Their son, Mostakin Alam Shovon, 35, allegedly carried out the attack before fleeing the scene.
 
According to police and local residents, Shovon, who was reportedly addicted to drugs, had been sent to rehabilitation centres several times by his parents but repeatedly escaped. His parents were preparing to send him to a centre again, but he refused to go.
 
Staff from a rehabilitation centre in Sirajganj had arrived at the family's home early Wednesday to take Shovon to the facility.
 
Realising their intention, Shovon came out of his room and stabbed his mother in the chest with a knife. When his father intervened, Shovon stabbed him repeatedly in the abdomen before fleeing.
 
The rehabilitation centre staff rescued the injured couple and took them to Kurigram General Hospital, where the on-duty physician declared Munira dead. Ali was later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
